High quality ferrous sulfate
Blue-green monoclinic crystals or particles, odorless. Weathering in dry air and oxidation of the surface to brown basic ferric sulfate in moist air. It becomes tetrahydrate at 56.6 C and monohydrate at 65 C. Soluble in water, almost insoluble in ethanol. Its aqueous solution slowly oxidizes in air when it is cold, and quickly oxidizes in hot. The addition of alkali or dew can accelerate its oxidation.
Industrially, ferrous sulfate is mainly used as a precursor to other iron compounds. It is a reducing agent, and as such is useful for the reduction of chromate in cement to less toxic Cr(III) compounds. Historically ferrous sulfate was used in the textile industry for centuries as a dye fixative. It is used historically to blacken leather and as a constituent of ink.
