Super absorbent polymers (SAP) are polymers that can absorb and retain extremely large amounts of liquid. They are solid, granular or powder cross linked polymers that rapidly absorb and retain large volumes of aqueous solutions. They absorb aqueous solutions through hydrogen bonding with water molecules. A SAP's ability to absorb water is dramatically dependent on the ionic concentration in aqueous solution. SAP may absorb the amount of distilled water 500 times greater than its weight, expanding by nearly 40 times its own volume. The presence of ions in the solution creates osmotic pressure that competes with an osmotic pressure within the polymer, thus reducing the water capacity to bind with polymer.
