Introduction:
Loperamide hydrochloride is a white or almost white crystalline powder, can be used as antidiarrheal, or long-acting anti-diarrhea drug used for the treatment of acute and chronic dysentery.
Loperamide slows the rhythm of digestion so that the small intestines have more time to absorb fluid and nutrients from the foods you eat.
Loperamide is effective for the treatment of a number of types of diarrhea. This includes control of acute nonspecific diarrhea, mild traveler's diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic diarrhea due to bowel resection, and chronic diarrhea secondary to inflammatory bowel disease. It is also useful for reducing ileostomy output. Off Label uses for loperamide also include chemotherapy induced diarrhea, especially related toirinotecan use.
Mechanism of Action:
Loperamide acts on receptors along the small intestine to decrease circular and longitudinal muscle activity. Loperamide exerts its antidiarrheal action by slowing intestinal transit and increasing contact time, and perhaps also by directly inhibiting fluid and electrolyte secretion and/or stimulating salt and water absorption.
Function:
For acute diarrhea and chronic diarrhea caused by a variety of reasons.
Is effective to diarrhea caused stomach, intestinal partial resection and hyperthyroidism.
Particularly applicable to chronic functional diarrhea that other antidiarrheal effect is not significant.
